Where AI belongs, and where it doesn't

A practical map of AI in an association or nonprofit, sorted by what happens when it is wrong. Drafting and summarizing, answers to members and donors, and decisions about people each need a different level of care. Some uses we would decline to build at all.

In short

  • Sort uses by the cost of a mistake, not by how impressive they are.
  • Drafting and summarizing for staff: start here.
  • Member and donor answers: only from their own record, with a way to a person.
  • Decisions about people: AI prepares the file. A person decides and gives the reasons.
  • Review only counts if the reviewer has the time and the evidence to disagree.
  • Decide how you will measure it before you switch it on.
